JKSSB Class IV Recruitment 2026: Selection Criteria & Marks Distribution Explained
Written test marks alone don't decide your rank in JKSSB's Class-IV recruitment — home cadre bonus points, family employment status, and casual worker weightage all factor in. Here's exactly how the 100-mark merit is calculated.

Written test marks alone don’t decide your rank in JKSSB’s Class-IV recruitment, home cadre bonus points, family employment status, and casual worker weightage all factor in. Here’s exactly how the 100-mark merit is calculated.
Why Selection Criteria Matters More Than You Think
Under JKSSB Advertisement Notification No. 09 of 2026, the final merit for Class-IV (MTS) and Sanitation Worker posts is not based on the written test alone. Depending on which cadre you’re applying for UT, Divisional, or District the written test contributes only 75% to 85% of the total 100 marks. The rest comes from additional weightage criteria defined under S.O. 184 of 2020 and SRO 404 of 2018.
This means two candidates who score identically in the written exam can still finish at very different ranks, depending on their eligibility for bonus marks. Understanding this system before you apply and before Document Verification is critical.
JKSSB Class IV Recruitment 2026 Three Selection Criteria Structures
Because vacancies are split across UT Cadre, Divisional Cadre, and District Cadre, JKSSB applies a different marks structure to each, the key difference being how much weight is given to “home cadre” preference.
| Cadre Type | Written Test Weightage | Home Cadre Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| UT Cadre | 85 marks | Not applicable (open UT-wide) |
| Divisional Cadre | 80 marks | 5 marks (Home Division) |
| District Cadre | 75 marks | 10 marks (Home District) |
Key insight: The more localized the cadre, the less weight the written test carries relative to home-area preference. For District Cadre posts specifically, home-district candidates get a full 10-mark head start over non-home-district applicants, a significant edge in a close competition.
JKSSB Class IV Recruitment 2026 UT Cadre: Marks Breakdown (Total 100)
For UT Cadre posts (open to candidates across all of Jammu & Kashmir), the criteria are as follows.
| S.No. | Criteria | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Written Test | 85 |
| 2 | Candidates whose family member is not/has not been in Government service (incl. PSUs/Boards/Autonomous Bodies substantially owned by Government) | 05 |
| 3 | Widows, divorced women, judicially separated women, and orphan girls | 05 |
| 4 | Casual worker engaged for 5+ years | 05 |
| — | Total | 100 |
JKSSB Class IV Recruitment 2026 Divisional Cadre: Marks Breakdown (Total 100)
For Divisional Cadre posts (Jammu Division or Kashmir Division), one additional criterion, home division, is introduced, and the written test weight drops slightly to accommodate it.
| S.No. | Criteria | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Written Test | 80 |
| 2 | Candidate of the Home Division (per Domicile Certificate) | 05 |
| 3 | Family member not/has not been in Government service | 05 |
| 4 | Widows, divorced women, judicially separated women, and orphan girls | 05 |
| 5 | Casual worker engaged for 5+ years | 05 |
| — | Total | 100 |
JKSSB Class IV Recruitment 2026 District Cadre: Marks Breakdown (Total 100)
District Cadre posts carry the highest non-written-test weightage of the three structures, home district status alone is worth 10 marks, double what Divisional Cadre allocates for home division.
| S.No. | Criteria | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Written Test | 75 |
| 2 | Candidate of the Home District (per Domicile Certificate) | 10 |
| 3 | Family member not/has not been in Government service | 05 |
| 4 | Widows, divorced women, judicially separated women, and orphan girls | 05 |
| 5 | Casual worker engaged for 5+ years | 05 |
| — | Total | 100 |
Understanding Each Weightage Criterion
1. Family Not in Government Service (5 Marks — All Cadres)
This criterion rewards candidates whose immediate family has no history of government employment. “Family” is strictly defined as spouse, brother, sister, and parents only, no other relatives count.
To claim this weightage, the candidate’s claim must be verified and authenticated by an officer holding the rank of Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Additional Commissioner, or Additional Deputy Commissioner of the concerned jurisdiction.
2. Widows, Divorced Women, Judicially Separated Women & Orphan Girls (5 Marks — All Cadres)
This weightage is available to women in the specified circumstances, verified through a certificate issued by the Tehsildar of the concerned area.
3. Casual Worker Engaged for 5+ Years (5 Marks — All Cadres)
Available to candidates who have worked as casual workers for a minimum of five years. Under the notification’s definition, “Casual Worker” includes:
- Daily Rated Workers
- Persons engaged through a Hospital Development Fund or Local Fund
- Adhoc/Contractual/Consolidated workers
Proof required: Documentary evidence of wages for a minimum of five years, countersigned by the District or Divisional Head of the office where the candidate worked.
Bonus for this category: Casual workers also get a 5-year relaxation in the upper age limit, separate from the marks weightage, covered in the main eligibility article.
4. Home Division / Home District (5 or 10 Marks — Divisional & District Cadre Only)
This is the largest single weightage available and applies only to Divisional and District Cadre posts (not UT Cadre, since UT Cadre has no “home area” concept). Your home division or district is determined strictly by your Domicile Certificate, there’s no separate application or proof needed beyond the domicile document itself.
How This Affects Your Strategy
Because of this multi-factor scoring system, here’s what candidates should keep in mind:
- A strong written test score is still the foundation, it’s worth 75–85% of the total, so exam preparation remains the single biggest lever
- If you’re applying for a District Cadre post outside your home district, you’re competing at a structural 10-mark disadvantage against home-district candidates, factor this into which item numbers you apply for
- Gather your supporting documents early. Certificates for family employment status, casual worker proof, or widow/divorced status must be ready and valid as on the cut-off date (03.11.2026), these cannot be arranged last-minute at Document Verification
- Multiple weightages can stack. A candidate who is, say, a home-district applicant and a casual worker of 5+ years and has no family member in government service could accumulate all applicable bonus marks simultaneously, provided each is separately substantiated
Where This Fits in the Overall Selection Process
The marks-based merit described above is calculated after the written examination. The broader selection journey looks like this:
- Online Application; candidate selects cadre(s)/item number(s) and cadre/department preferences
- Written Examination; objective MCQs, English medium, with 1/4 negative marking per wrong answer
- Merit Calculation; written test marks + applicable weightage marks (per the tables above)
- Document Verification (DV); shortlisted candidates must produce original certificates for every claim made, including weightage claims
- Cadre/Department Allocation; based on merit-cum-preference; once notified, this allocation is final and binding
Important: If a weightage claim cannot be substantiated with the correct certificate at Document Verification, it will simply not be counted, the candidate is not disqualified outright for this reason alone, but their merit score is recalculated without that bonus.
Legal Note on False Claims
JKSSB has explicitly warned that reservation or weightage claims made on the basis of an invalid, false, fake, fraudulent, or forged certificate will result in the candidate being debarred from Board examinations, in addition to whatever penal action is deemed appropriate. This applies equally to category/reservation certificates and to the weightage criteria discussed in this article.
